Some photos of my other Obession - Ants!

Postby Drake » Mon May 10, 2010 1:07 pm

So I have an obsession with these little guys. Not sure why, but I have my whole life. But only as of the last year and a half I got more serious into keeping them.

Probably my best photo. The camera used is not meant for this type of photography. I really need to get a proper camera with a special macro lense! Not cheap, so I must wait :( .

Photo of a Myrmecia sp queen... its a photo of a Bull Dog ant Queen! People who know these ants, know them well. They have very good eye sight, and will run after you. They are basically wingless wasps, very aggressive even if you go 10 meters toward their nest. But I know they have a cuter, softer side ^.=.^

Could not find the image on the computer to upload it. Golden Polyrhachis, they have such a wonderful golden color! Sadly the colony died =/. Polyrhachis are pretty temperamental.

Good pictures ;)
Nothing wrong with a strange obsession, and it looks like you know your ants. (all the same to me >.>)
Do you keep your own colony?

I am still learning names. I am not sure how people can remember, let alone pronounce these names! I only have a small colony of Iridomyrmex sp (Species).

The camera died before I had a chance to take a photo of the setup finished, oh well!

I want to keep a number of other species in the near future. Bull Dog ants being at the top!

I have an uncle who is into photographing these guys, and Praying Mantis. I bought a proper Macro Lens back from the US for him, and it cost like $600AUD. Bugs actually look quite handsome when done under a macro lens.

I could never tell the difference between Bull Ants and Sugar Ants. I fail X3

I did not noticed Fuzzies reply! And yeah, I think it would be very hard :P. When you get that close, I think the SMALLEST vibrations can mess up the photo?

Macro photography WOULD be very fun indeed!

i was more thinking about the focal distance. ants don't stand still, and the focal distance on that is TINY (focal distance? focal length? i dont know, i is not photo person... ask reathen what i mean, im sure he can translate my mere-mortal into photo-guy-speak)
