Nunslaughter is a very good death metal band, probably my favourite. Their music is a hell of a lot of fun and sounds like it was ripped straight from 1989. Here's one of their best songs.

Also obviously recommendable is Bolt Thrower. Here's the title track from For Victory. You probably would have heard of them though if you've listened to a lot of metal.

If you want groovy, more modern sounding death metal, you should check out Sexcrement. They sound like this (the lyrics as supplied in the video's description are a bit vulgar, just to warn you).

An Aussie band I'd suggest too is Grave Upheaval. They're a bit like... well, you should check them out and see. They've got no YouTube videos but they've got a MySpace here.

Now for black metal, I'd suggest the hugely underrated Thy Primordial. This is one of their best tracks, IMO.

Another 'cool' band is Imperial Crystalline Entombment. They're a bit like Marduk, I guess. Here's a song off their album.

I'll go out on a limb here and suggest Lengsel. Really nice, progressive sort of black metal. However, what may be rather offputting is the fact that they're a bit Christian. Here's their song Avmakt off their first album, Solace. Second album is utter crap though.

If you want some doomy stuff (not really of the "traditional" variety, but still...) I'd suggest Blameworthy Warlock. They're pretty much long gone now, but they made a couple of really bloody good demos that are worth checking out if you like death/doom.

Another good doom band is Khanate, who I pretty much worship. In the band are Stephen O'Malley from Sunn O))) and Alan Dubin from O.L.D. so it's obviously going to be good :P. Here's one of the songs off their first album, which is probably their most metal album (their later stuff tended to be much more ambient, kinda like the song in the link on sedatives).

Also recommendable is Paramaecium, which features Jayson Sherlock from Mortification (so it's kinda Christian, but don't let that dissuade you). Basically they sound like early death/doom without any gothic influences and it is super heavy. Example.

Barren Earth sounds like Opeth, with all the deep gutteral growls and the slightly eerie atmosphere, but has a heavy sludgy sound
Voivod are old school thrash. It's Jason Newstead's band
Scarve are tech-death metal with a crushing sound and a Meshuggah influence. The drummer is insanely fantastic
Sybreed are industrial metal, also with a huge crushing sound
Koyaanisqatsy, link 1 and 2 sounds like if Symphony X went all out and wrote a movie score, and it blows me away every time

Also, I almost forgot Orphaned Land! They're a prog-metal band from Israel which have lots of great hooks and melodies, and a strong middle-eastern influence and they incorporate a lot of traditional instruments into their songs
