Can announcements be set with an expiry date?

Postby Sebastian » Wed May 22, 2013 8:32 am

This has come up a few times in various threads. The discussions page is filled with out of date announcements. There are events listed there that go back more than 12 months. Does the vanilla forum engine have a way to set an expiry on announcements so that they are no longer listed in discussions when they become history?

We have to bear in mind that some of the anouncements really cannot be outdated. It might be better to manually remove those threads that are outdated.

For example, the central brisbane fur meet tells you to look at the FB link for more updated information. While some people loathe this, it is, inevitably, much better for keeping in contact.

They can build in a system... like an autolocker+/deleter... one which when a topic is made the admins and mods have free reign to choose or alters if a page autolocks+/deletes sometime later...

Squeeee, it seemz much cleaner... which is good. Do you think it would be pawsible to start removing a few of the hundred of dead topics in the other sections, that would clean up everything vastly. ouo

I agree on either method, because the dead topics are annoying to have around.
And well.. There is no post ranking system now days so why not?

There is a setting to trim old topics. I will look into it and decide on a good time frame.

I'd suggest something along the lines of 6-18 months as the min/max range. Bear in mind that this means some topics that are still relevant will be shunted out once it is past this timeframe, or some topics which have amassed a large amount of support and ideas being shunted. Is there a way to have them archived but not visible on the list?

Amen to Wererstritchy's comment. I wouldn't like old threads to be deleted entirely. Sometimes renewed interest can appear and they become very active again. We had plenty of that before people deserted Furstralia.

What i would recommend the mods do, (when there are available ones to do this) is to check out the threads that are old, and look at whether there is enough context in the thread to be useful. For example, threads that are time sensitive like 'furmeet this weekend! 25th of october 2011, sign up here!' Kind of threads won't have much relevance to the current day. But do bear in mind that though outdated, they still might have relevant info that can be put in other topics.

Also the 'popular threads' box to the side is awesome.
