RP: Elementals [Private: AC and Furr]

Postby AustralianChaos » Wed Mar 08, 2017 3:46 pm

OOC: Alright, my first effort at a forum-based RP in over 5 years. Let's see how this goes. This is a private RP between me and Furrhan, but if you would like to RP with either of us, simply sent us a PM. I know I personally would be happy to try and do a few of these! Without further ado, onto the show!

With the blare of the airhorn, the race was underway, ten figures all launching from their starting pads and racing off for the first electronic gate that marked their course, grandstands around the course alive with noise as spectators cheered on their chosen competitors. The race was part of a long day of air-based competitions, the Draconian Airshow one of the dragon race's biggest tourism and entertainment draws. In it, both anthro and feral dragons competed in various aerial sports and displays, from majestic aerobatic dance routines to the fast-paced races current being held. Each event was divided into several divisions based on the physical attributes of the competitors, such as gender, the specific race of dragon, and whether they were anthro or feral.

The race currently on was the Male Feral Spectacular, a 10-dragon race where any feral male, regardless of species, could compete. Like many of the open-species events, it tended to be dominated by the sleek, avian Skydancers; feathered dragons with an unparalleled natural affinity for flying. But other species often enjoyed seeing how they compared, and in the case of one competitor, the open division was the only type he was allowed to fly in.

The dragon in question was near the front of the pack...a slim, sleek looking being whose vibrant yellow scales made him easy to spot. The scales, slim build, and smaller size - being rough six feet tall at the shoulder when standing on the ground - meant many initially mistook him for a young or undersized Drake. A second look soon disproved that misconception, though, his charcoal wings half-covered in sleek, jet black feathers Drakes did not possess. His brilliant yellow scales were also unique, unusually vibrant for a scaled dragon. The male, named Darwing Sapphire-Storm, was actually a rare crossbreed. His mother had been a Drake, while his father was a Skydancer.

As the race ran through its first lap, it was obvious that Darwing had inherited a Skydancer's passion and skill for flying. He moved with a mix of speed and grace, legs tucked in to reduce drag, wings only half-spread once he had gained speed, making only short, quick flaps to maintain height, conserving energy and letting his speed keep him airborne. After the first of five laps, he was in third place, behind two Skydancers, and nipping at the heels of the second-placed one, searching for a chance to get by him. He was calm and focused, completely ignoring the crowd which would otherwise give him horrendous stage fright. This was what he loved doing.

He had no idea, however, how one incident in this race, and one member of the crowd, would end up throwing his simple life into disarray.

In front of a tent in a corner of the arena a small figure lounges in a folding chair, his hind paws up on the table before him as he watches the race. The red cross on the tent and the gold badge pinned to his shirt mark him as a healer. He sighs in contentment as he watches the race. Events like this always bring him plenty of work, both from the crowd hyped on adrenaline and from the racers who don't always play fair. He stands to make a good bit of money today, and just for a lark he'd put a few coins on the small gold dragon. If he wins, the healer will be rolling in it and if not, well he'll still have enough coin from today to eat comfortably from the next few weeks.

Few know, however, of this healer's true nature. A small spring from a plant with a round, golden blossom adorns his collar, giving just a hint to the discerning eye of what this mage is truly capable.

The small figure flicks a fly away with his tail and sips at his lemonade, watching the dragons roar past.

The yellow crossbreed raced hard, banking tight in the corners, powering hard with his wings down the straights, all the while ignoring the roaring crowds, focused on the tail of the Skydancer immediately in front of him.

His patience was rewarded halfway through the second lap, as the Skydancer hit one corner too fast, swinging wide, having to flare his wings and lose speed to correct. Darwing pounced, cutting hard on the inside line of the corner, back brushing the leaves of a tree acting as an obstacle as he slipped his slim body around the Skydancer and powered on ahead, his opponent giving a startled, angry noise, something of a trilling growl as he gave chase.

Interestingly, the cheers for Darwing's move were muted...a lot of dragons seeming unhappy with the development. Even the commentators barely acknowledged his flying skills, most of the praise coming from other species. It seemed Darwing was disliked by most other dragons, though one watching from a VIP section devoted to performers in other events seemed to be trying to make up the difference on her own; a Skydancer with iridescent purple plumage who was cheering Darwing on with all her heart.

But the general animosity for Darwing only became more pronounced in the final lap, as he caught up with the race leader, a brilliant red Skydancer whose attitude seemed to match his firey feathers. After Darwing managed to once more cut inside a corner to pull level, the red dragon rolled and rammed him hard, jostling him in the air and making him yelp in surprise.

The crowd's response was telling: The non-dragons, anthro and feral alike, along with a few scattered dragons, including the purple Skydancer, booed and cried foul at the attempt to sabotage and potentially crash Darwing. The majority of the dragons however, seemed to ignore the Skydancer's unsporting tactics, some even cheering him on. There was clear and blatant favouritism at play, and it showed as the Skydancer got more and more aggressive, while Darwing just rolled and ducked away with quick reflexes, suggesting that this was a common occurance in his life, and that any attempt to return the aggresdion in kind, or even think about it, would see him disqualified.

The healer cheers as Darwing catches up to the leader, watching intently as the two race neck and neck. He can almost taste the giant steak and crispy chips that'll be the first thing he buys when the golden dragon wins the race!

Reluctantly he tears his eyes away for a few moments to bandage a worker who'd cut his hand on a broken bottle but the instant the bandage is secure he turns his eyes to the sky again as he drops his gloves in a bin and washes his paws with water from a tap near the tent.

The closer the race got to the finish, the more dirty the red Skydancer's tactics became, pushing Darwing around, hitting him with his tail, trying to drive him off the course. Darwing knew that if he had tried any of this himself he would be instantly disqualified, and the Skydancer would probably be penalised if it was anyone other than him he was trying to hurt. But he was a crossbreed...nearly unique among the dragons, and seen as a curse or abomination by many, so such dirty tactics were free play against him. He suspected he was only allowed to fly in these races so other dragons could see him fail spectacularly.

Sure enough, on the last turn, the Skydancer crossed a line. As Darwing tried to gain a little height and cut inside to fly over the red dragon, he lashed viciously with his claws, slashing at Darwing's lowered left wing. While some jostling and bumping was technically allowed in these races, outright attacking another racer was not. Despite this, no race officials intervened to announce a penalty or disqualification. All the same, Darwing gave a yelp, startled and frightened by the unexpected aggression - Skydancers were normally a fairly pacifistic, if passionate race. He banked hard away, barely avoiding the claws, but reversing direction so suddenly in a high speed turn sent him spiralling out of control, tumbling towards the trees. The whole crowd gasped at the turn of events, though most of the dragons quickly cheered as the Skydancer shot off down the final straight, roaring in pride now that his win was assured. The rest, including the purple Skydancer, watching Darwing's tumble anxiously, preparing for an ugly crash landing...he was too close to the trees to pull away in time, and even Darwing himself knew it.

Yet in that moment, running on panic and adrenaline, something no-one expected happened. Desperately willing himself to pull up, Darwing's black, half-feathered wings suddenly took on a creamy yellow glow of magical power, the air in front of him similarly shimmering and glowing, before the pocket of air suddenly swirled into a powerful gust of wings that blew against his flared wings, yanking him roughly as they slowed his tumble and allowed him to pull up...claws brushing the treetops as he barely got away before crashing, pulling into a hover and panting hard as the glow faded, leaving just as suddenly as it had arrived, leaving him baffled as the other racers quickly overtook him. He did not bother trying to finish, he could hear the officials in his earpiece, declaring him disqualified for using unauthorised magic during the race.

Sure enough, those in the crowd familiar with magic would be aware that he had indeed used it...specifically Air-based Elemental magic...and it was against the rules to use in these races, which were a test of natural speed and flying skill. Despite this, the non-dragons in the crowd broke out into a round of severe boos and jeers as the red Skydancer crossed the finish line as the official winner, calling for him to be disqualified as well for his outright attack on Darwing...cries the officials ignored. The Skydancer was declared the winner, while Darwing recieved a DNF as he made his way over to the Race Square, essentially a landing pad where racers went to after the race to land, rest and recuperate with family and friends, and also get checked over by medical volunteers. As he landed, the purple Skydancer left her place in the crowd to join him...though interesting to both her and Darwing, for once she was not the only one...

"FOUL PLAY! ARE YOU BLIND, REF? OR JUST BOUGHT OFF???" the mage screeches, shaking his fist before turning to tend to a kid who'd slipped and cut his knee.
That done, he hurries to pack up his medical kit and jogs to the Race Square ready to treat the golden dragon should he need help. He had noticed the glow during the race and ponders it as he draws closer.

At just shy of two feet tall the dragon towers over him but the mage shows no fear as he approaches.

"Well raced, Mister Storm. That win was rightfully yours. Do you require treatment after the way that red lizard brutalised you?" he queries with a bow, holding up his bag to show the healer's badge.

Darwing panted hard as he settled on the edge of the Square to rest, leaving his wings splayed to relax them as the purple Skydancer landed beside him, managing to beat the medic there as she pulls the larger yellow dragon into a gentle hug. "Are you alright, Dar?" she asked.

At just under five feet at the shoulder, the Skydancer was slightly taller than average for her species, though otherwise was a prime example of a Skydancer, the large crests of feathers on her head and tail showing her to be a healthy young adult with good ancestry. Her name was Serafyn Stormwind...Darwing's half-sister, and one of the best aerobatic fliers currently alive among the dragons.

"Yeah, I'm okay, Sera," he muttered back, his voice soft and quiet. Any further conversation was halted by the arrival of the quoll. Interestingly, Darwing shrank back at his approach, in spite of the medic's small stature clearly intimidated somehow. Sera was also quick to respond, shifting so she was partially between the quoll and Darwing, muzzle taking on a fierce edge. Protective.

His words, and offer of medical assistance, eased Sera's hard edge, though her voice still sounded wary as she responded, Darwing remaining silent, looking towards her. "It's alright, Darwing. He's a healer for the show,"she reassured him gently as she stepped aside, turning back to the quoll.

"I'm sorry, sir. Darwing's not good with strangers. Go ahead and check him if you wish, but I don't think your services are required. Featherbrain over there couldn't hit a boulder if he tried, and no-one's been able to catch Darwing in the air for years."

"No, madam." the quoll declines with a bow. "I would not presume to so much as touch him without his permission. Such would be against the oath of the healer." The quoll retreats a little to a safe distance, discrete enough that the pair of dragons can talk comfortably but close enough that they can easily summon him back if desired. His attention is soon turned to a slightly torn wing belonging to a slower dragon that had dropped out earlier. He pulls on a pair of sterile gloves, douses the wing in anaesthetic and begins sewing it back together, humming quietly to himself as he works.

As the medic tended to another racer, Darwing and Serafyn had a hushed conversation. From their body language, it was clear Darwing was anxious, bordering on scared, while Sera was patiently reassuring. It was clear the yellow mixbreed had a real issue with strangers.

Finally, however they stopped, Sera stepping aside as Darwing spoke up. "Erm...you can come do your...your checkup, sir," he said, though his words were stilted, unsure of himself and full of nerves. As if to prove he was serious, he lay down on his belly, wing splayed out limply beside him.

Sera also chose that moment to start a conversation as well. "Sorry for the lack of introductions, I'm Serafyn," she said, rather unnecessarily. Her name was spreading around the show, having won the Female Skydancer Aerobatics contest convincingly.

Once he's finished sewing, the quoll packs up again and heads back to Darwing.
"Greetings Serafyn and Darwing. My name is Furrhan. Are you hurt, sir?"
