I tend to make goals about things I want to see progress, like 'do coloured art once a month', or to watch movies a certain amount of times a year, or even to just spend a certain amount of money.
in 2012, for example I had this list.New year's resolution 2012
Read 2 chapters of the bible.
Enter a competition
Play a proper April fool's joke
Create a plot for Kaerwyn: http://www.kaerwyn.org
Draw up a full digital detailed drawing
24-Hour comic challenge --> http://www.24hourcomicsday.com/
Spend $100 online
Draw three pictures/comics to those I admire for their work
Lose 20 kg (year goal)
Write a novel for national November writing month
Set out to go to a real Christmas party
I only achieved 6 goals of the 12, but it meant that I actually achieved some goals I set out to achieve!
My goals for this year are monthly based again, but this time, its the same goals every month.
One full colour picture finshed
One 10+ minute narration completed
One movie watched
I want to add more, but three things a month is a pretty good goal, one for every week, and one week off. I might try to put in a commission every month for next year, but will see how it pans out. I don't have anything in particular that I want to desperately achieve this year, as I've already got a lot of stuff planned from the previous year which is finally taking place.
What goals do people set, and what's your preferences in setting them?

Greatly reduce the amount of sugar and fat I consume - especially to cease bying those sugary teas I drink too often.
Tidy up the apartment more often
Devote more time to practicing drawing & writing
Generally I set goals when I see room for improvement in myself. The start of a year is a good time to do so as it make measuring the goal much easier.
